The Society of Glass Technology is a non-profit making organisation serving a worldwide membership bringing together the research of academics throughout the world and the needs of glass manufacturers and artists, to encourage the cross fertilisation, and practical application, of ideas for the benefit of the whole glass community. We publish journals and text books; organise meetings, symposia and conferences on glass related topics; coordinate the activities of special interest groups and technical committees; and provide a communication framework geared to the needs of the glass community.
Corporate Members have a number of options depending upon the level of involvement they wish to have and if they wish to take advantage of a number of promotional opportunities i.e. free or discounted advertising in the Journals, on the website and at the annual meetings. - Please follow this link for options.
So how do you benefit by becoming a Corporate Member?
Publications
- Journals - Within the membership fee the Corporate Member you will receive one, or more, of the two highly respected journals published by the Society. These journals currently have subscribers from 39 countries, many taking both journals. From 2006 our journal profile will be further enhanced thanks to collaboration with our sister society in Germany (the DGG). Our two bimonthly journals are:
- European Journal of Glass Science and Technology Part A: Glass Technology - covering glass making, glass fabrication, properties and applications of glasses or glass ceramics and other related topics. In addition to refereed papers, Glass Technology contains SGT and industry news together with conference proceedings and review papers.
- European Journal of Glass Science and Technology Part B: Physics and Chemistry of Glasses - the leading international, peer-reviewed publication for research scientists in the fields of glass structure and properties.
Abstracts - The Abstracts sections of both journals are considered to be the most comprehensive in the glass community. The society’s library collection and abstract database is available to all members.
Advertising – Corporate Members receive discounts on adverts and some packages include free adverts, web presence and meeting sponsorship.
- Books & Conference Proceedings – As a Corporate Member, our publications are available to you at a substantial discount. We publish definitive texts on glass and related areas: including translations of renowned historic essays, technical books for universities and colleges, and specialist works for industry, as well as the proceedings of several major conferences including: the meetings of the European Society of Glass Science and Technology (ESG), Fundamentals of the Glass Manufacturing Process; and the Borate Glasses, Crystals and Melts conference series.
- You may have a manuscript that we can publish for you! We can print on demand so that audience size is not a limitation.
- Members also receive discounts off texts published by other publishers.
Meetings
- Annual Meeting - this offers you, at a special discount for Corporate Members, a platform for scientific, technological and artistic presentations, and an invaluable opportunity to establish and renew personal contacts with attendees from around the world. Industrial and scientific sessions run concurrently during the meeting, alongside meetings of our special interest groups.
- Annual Meeting Invites – the Society can send out on your behalf invites to your customers which you can obtain at a special discount.
- Annual Meeting Sponsorship – Corporate Member options include sponsorship packages. For Corporate/Advertiser packages this can include stand space, links on the website and your name on meeting literature.
- Local sections, including the USA and India, meet for lectures, often with other groups such as the Institute of Refractory Engineers and the Contemporary Glass Society, and for social events including outings, quizzes and dinner dances.
- Clinic meetings are arranged by the technical committees so you can discuss topical issues of the day in semi-structured meetings.
- International conferences – We have a reputation for sponsoring successful, high-profile, international conferences on glass topics both in the UK and abroad, providing an added focus for Members – for example the International Congress on Glass in 2001, the Sol-Gel Workshop, the Non-Oxide Glasses meeting, Crystallisation in Glasses and Melts 2003, and for the second time we will be hosting the European Society of Glass Science and Technology conference – this time in Sunderland in September 2006.
- Key lectures – during 2006 we will endeavour to make available in the members area of the website texts of key lectures and case studies.
Other Benefits
- Certified Reference Materials – We offer you at a discount our range of standard glass, sand, limestone and dolomite Certified Reference Materials for analysis and calibration.
- Technical Committees – You can participate in one of our own Technical Committees. For example the Analysis and Properties TC encourages inter-laboratory round robins, organises the analysis of our Certified Reference Materials and works with the BSI on defining standard procedures.
- Special Interest Groups - including History and Heritage of Glass, Structure of Amorphous Solids and the New Researchers Forum are waiting for you to join.
- Web access to archives – you will receive free access to a wealth of information via the archived copies of our journals and proceedings through our partners Ingenta Connect (password obtained via the SGT office).
- Abstract Database - The SGT staff can search our abstract database, based on relevant technical and glass-orientated journals, and for a small fee provide copies of the papers. This service is only available to Members and is discounted to Corporate Members.
- Information Source - The SGT staff and the website can guide members to information from a variety of sources including our list of consultants.
- Through its link with The Institute of Materials, Mining and Minerals the SGT can help members gain internationally recognised qualifications including Chartered status, subject to meeting criteria.
- Personal Development – is encouraged by offering prizes, certificates and sponsorship – submit an undergraduate project for the Oldfield Award, be considered for the Glass Sellers Award, be recognised for an exceptional oral or poster presentation, or apply for the prestigious SGT Fellowship. We offer personal development certificates for attendance at our meetings.
- International Representation – The SGT is founder member of the International Commission on Glass and the European Society of Glass Science and Technology. You therefore have a voice on the international stage either indirectly or by becoming involved yourself.
